If Kutztown University Teacher candidates are interested in becoming an online distance intervention tutor, or eventually student teaching in Alaska, they should contact the programs coordinator, Associate Professor, Dr. Kristen Bazley.
About the Coordinator:
Dr. Bazley started her relationship with LPSD (Lake and Pennisula School District), in 2010 through the Pen-Pal project and working with a Kutztown Alumni to enhance the amount of reading materials students had in their homes. It was after a very successful year of working with that teacher and the school district, the administration of LPSD approached Dr Bazley about expanding the professional relationship to include a distance tutoring program. It was through a grant that the Distance Interventionists at Kutztown University was born.
The Pre-Service teachers and Dr. Bazley work with the same students all year via Zoom. This is a volunteer program on all aspects for both Pre-Service Teachers and Coordinator/Supervisor . Teacher candidates also sign a yearly contract, agreeing to tutor for at least one year, in order to keep consistency for the Alaskan Students. What started out as a very small program with 4 Pre-Service teachers, has grown to having at least 20 Pre-Service teachers with a wait-list in any particular year. Through this unique program, Pre-Service teachers are able to practice first hand skills that they are learning in the college courses with actual “students”, helping to cement the theory and skills. Tutors also receive one on one instruction and help from the coordinator/Supervisor, Dr Bazley and AK Head Teacher on the Alaska side.
If you are interested in joining this unique and amazing experience/program, you must contact Dr. Bazley and fill out an application. I look forward to working with you! Email: Bazley@kutztown.edu
